Full Day Course

Content Overview:

People with neurological impairment are at high risk of developing postural deformities and adopting asymmetrical positions that they are unable to move out of. Whilst the norm is to focus heavily on seating, consideration of just one position alone is not enough. Analysis of positioning patterns assumed throughout the 24 hours of the day is required to effectively protect body shape and promote health and wellbeing outcomes.

This training event will be divided into 2 separate sessions which focus on the other 2 main positions of lying and standing, attendees are invited to attend 1 or both sessions depending on their specific areas of interest or role in the MDT:

Lying

Session 1 (9am-12pm) focuses on night-time positioning, the commonly missed piece of the postural care puzzle. The consequences of asymmetrical, unsupported postures in lying will be discussed, highlighting the impact this had on body shape and function. Strategic and systematic assessment will be discussed in order to understand client needs and select appropriate solutions. There will be an opportunity to explore product options, considering the benefits of different approaches.

Standing

Session 2 (12.30pm-3.30pm) will cover standing, the final position required for robust postural care in addition to lying and sitting. Attainable benefits through weightbearing will be highlighted with up-to-date evidence and research. A newly developed assessment tool to assist in standing frame selection will be provided to attendees and discussed during the session. Throughout the afternoon there will be opportunity to be hands on with products while we understand the unique benefits each option can bring the user.

Learning objectives/ Topics covered:

What is 24-hour postural care and when should we consider this approach?

• What are “destructive postures” and how do they impact the body negatively?

• Assessment considerations for Standing and Lying – identification of individual risk factors (in their respective sessions)

• What equipment is available to facilitate robust postural management in lying and standing?
