Standing Tall: Evidence Based Approaches To Time Out Of The Seat Position
Prolonged sitting is regarded by many to be an emerging public health concern with some describing it as the new smoking. Whilst the importance of regular movement and position change is now widely recognised, for those with a physical disability, accessing weight bearing in a standing position remains a big challenge. To overcome this, the benefits of supporting standing for children with physical impairment must be understood by all stakeholders in a way that is meaningful. To achieve optimum outcomes, selection of appropriate equipment must be based on individual needs. Analysing information gained from assessment is vital for informing appropriate standing frame and accessory selection.
This half day workshop will explore the area of standing and weightbearing, offering a comprehensive look at available literature and evidence which clinicians can use to inform their practice. We will overview the assessment process required to promote standing success with clients and their families and discuss contraindications, considerations, and dosing strategies. Attendees will have opportunity for hands on time with equipment, aimed to bring confidence to the prescription process from the trial through to delivery and follow up assessment.
Learning objectives:
- Why support standing in clients with movement impairment?
- What does available research and literature say about standing and time in weight bearing?
- Assessment considerations for Standing – identification of individual risk factors, considerations, and contraindications.
- Overview the equipment options available and the factors that influence decision making between these options.
- Hands on adjustment of standing frame equipment to promote growth and development.
