Power Seat Functions and Drive Wheel Configurations: Endless Possibilities with Power Mobility
Do you understand the differences in drive wheel configuration and power seat functions but want to develop your knowledge on how these can be used to increase function?
This course will take a deep and technical dive into the different power seat functions (PSFs) and the functional benefits they can have with reference to relevant evidence-based practice (EBP). We will explore how they work and what effects they may have on other components of the chair.
During the hands-on section, we will get into the PWCs to test out the suspension systems and feel the differences when navigating over uneven terrains or turning in tight spaces. Jump into the chairs and compare mid and front wheel drive bases and attempt to complete different functional tasks using a combination of PSFs.
Objectives:
1. Identify 2 functional benefits and considerations of each PSF.
2. Understand the impact drive wheel configuration has on environmental access.
3. Gain an understanding of the functional impact different actuators can have on PWC performance.
PM Session: 2 hours
On Time Mobility: Introducing Power Mobility to Infants
Mobility at an early stage in life aids in the development of functional activities including play. Critical changes occur during development when a child is able to move in a self-directed way. This session will look at the developmental importance of mobility and the reciprocal learning that occurs during mobility and interactions with people and the environment. Evidence now shows that access to powered mobility be considered as part of a comprehensive early intervention program. Best practice and strategies including newly developed protocols which can be used by the entire team will be discussed in detail along with case studies reviewed.
Objectives:
1. Understand the key developmental milestones which can occur when an infant is engaged in age-appropriate mobility.
2. Be able to use the recommended strategies within a multidisciplinary team to assist in implementing on time mobility for infants.
3. Understand the relationship between sensory input and motor output.

Roseanna Tegel
Clinical Services Specialist – Clinical Services
Permobil APAC
Roseanna Tegel joined Permobil in May 2023 as a Clinical Services Specialist after working as an Occupational Therapist in the community. She graduated from Western Sydney University with a Bachelor of Health Science/Master of Occupational Therapy and received the Prize in Undergraduate Occupational Therapy for Overall Achievement and the Cerebral Palsy Alliance scholarship. Roseanna has worked in residential and community aged care where her understanding of the need for suitable, person-centred equipment commenced. Roseanna then transitioned to community disability and quickly developed an interest for complex seating and mobility outcomes to benefit both the end user and wider network. She then stepped into a Team Leader role due to her passion for learning and best practice; supporting the Occupational Therapists with their own clinical needs and outcomes. Roseanna is motivated to support clinicians with their confidence and clinical reasoning allowing them to provide the best outcome for each individual user.
